Mobile World Congress 2020 (MWC ‘20) will soon be underway in Barcelona. Most likely will key focus be put on the latest within mobile infrastructure technologies such as 5G, Native Cloud, Edge Computing, IoT, Big data and AI, including 5G plans and real deployments among mobile operators, but also new mobile devices, VR/AR and new killer apps or enhancements taking place in the market. For enterprise users in particular, it is to be expected aggressive marketing by wireless operators of 5G/IIoT including business critical services with solid guarantees regarding such KPIs as high uptime and low latency.
But, 5G rollouts are not happening as quickly as was initially thought and wished for. Key players are adopting cautious approaches whilst others are more observing the market dynamics before committing in order to see whether 5G will be a big moneymaker. While most key stakeholders are embarking on larger roll-outs and 5G deployments the coming year, a potential showstopper might be renewed and stricter safety guidelines, which will mean that providers have to reassure the public about safety in the long-term as Industry 4.0 with 5G comes of age.
Therefore, some 2 weeks before MWC ‘20 opens, it remains to be seen what will come out of the event in terms of specific technology and service announcements, use cases and the need for further regulation. Overall, what is for certain there are many industry players nowadays polishing and energising their marketing messages.
